Autism and Asperger's Syndrome

Autism is a developmental disability that affects a person's ability to communicate and process information and sensory information. Autism ranges in ability from "low-functioning" to "high functioning" with IQ, communication skills and social skills as factors. People with autism seem to be highly rigid in their routines and can have very low social skills.

Asperger's Syndrome is a disability in which a person has average to above average IQ, but exhibits characteristics of autism.

Aspen Education Group's Talisman Program has a summer opportunity for children with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. Our goal for the summer program- Sight- is to provide an atmosphere that caters to the individual and specific needs of our children with autism and Asperger's Syndrome so that they are able to experience a fun and exciting summer camp experience. We focus on three goals throughout the duration of Sight: social skills, communication skills, and independent living skills. Activities are designed with these three goals in mind. Our structured and visual atmosphere encourages participants to feel comfortable and accepted in their environment, which in turn allows for students to learn and enjoy themselves, each other and their surroundings. Our program has a high staff to camper ratio of 2:1, which ensures that all of our participants achieve the goals that are set for them and also have opportunities for one on one instruction and attention. Activities include hiking, swimming, camping, rock climbing, day trips and much more!
