Adolescents with eating disorders commonly suffer from social impairment

By Staff Writer

Eating disorders are especially prevalent among teens. A recent study published in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry examined the pervasiveness and implications of several food-related conditions, including anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating.

Out of a group of more than 10,000 girls between the ages of 13 and 18, the study results showed that more than six percent reported that they suffered from various eating disorders.

The researchers found that instances of binge eating were more common than those of anorexia and bulimia.

Teen eating disorders are often the result of underlying psychological health issues. The study findings showed that the majority of participants who struggled with abnormal eating tendencies could also be diagnosed with at least one other mental disorder.

Social impairments were the most common co-existing conditions, researchers noted. Nearly 90 percent of the anorexic adolescents reported that they had experienced social disorders, while almost 20 percent said that they would rank their symptoms as severe.

Food maladies can be detrimental to an individual's physical health and mental well being. Teen boarding schools can provide comprehensive treatment for young adults who suffer from eating disorders and other psychological ailments.
