Alcohol is a serious threat to teenagers

By Staff Writer

According to the book Your Adolescent, there are about 20 million adult alcoholics in the U.S. Of these individuals, more than half of them started drinking when they were teenagers.

Aside from the fact that teens frequently have easy access to alcohol, many adults do not see occasional drinking as a serious problem and therefore may not use the same punishments that they would if their child got caught abusing drugs, the book states.

Although it may not seem like drinking is as harmful as drugs to some adults and their teens, about 10,000 youths are killed and 40,000 are injured in the U.S. every year as a result of alcohol consumption.

Recently, three teens in New Jersey learned first hand the trouble that alcohol can cause, the Cranford Chronicle reports. The girls were driving at about 1:00 a.m. when they got pulled over for driving erratically. Police said they immediately noticed that the underage girls were drunk.

All three girls were charged with underage consumption of alcohol, while the youth who drove the car was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Parents who believe their children are in danger of becoming alcoholics may want to consider enrolling them in a troubled youth boarding school.
