Anti-drug conversations may deter kids from substance abuse
By Staff Writer
Many kids choose to abuse illicit substances after pressure from their peers. However, experts say that addiction in families may easily be preventable by engaging in a few open conversations about drugs, according to ABC-2 News. The influence of teen celebrities can have a powerful effect on adolescents, including kids who closely follow pop culture and the media. Recently, a video of former Disney actress Miley Cyrus reportedly smoking salvia went viral, raising concerns among parents with children who idolize the celebrity. Although salvia is a legal herb, it can cause dangerous side effects, such as hallucinations and a loss of inhibition. Shelly Mowrey, a member of the Drug Free Arizona anti-substance abuse group, told the news source that parents may be able to deter kids from using drugs with a few simple conversations. Celebrities may make substance abuse look "cool," but explaining to children early in life of the dangers that come with using drugs can be an effective teaching tool. More than 29 percent of high school students say they can easily obtain drugs on campus, according to Teen Help, an addiction resource site. Building trust and keeping lines of communication open can prevent kids from turning to drugs.
