Anti-drug event raises $1,000 for Georgia community

By Staff Writer

Many kids turn to drugs to cope with the stress of school work and family life. However, anti-drug events held by local groups can have a lasting positive effect on a community and children who may be susceptible to substance abuse.

Recently, the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office in Georgia held its 25th annual "Say No to Drugs and Skate" event to educate the public on the dangers of illicit substances, according to FOX-31 News. Every year, the goal of the event is to show kids that there are healthier alternatives to drugs. Experts say that providing local communities with knowledge on the negative consequences of using illicit substances can make a positive impact on young lives.

Dougherty police lieutenant Terron Hayes told the news source that there are no benefits to using drugs. Individuals who find the confidence to say no to illicit substances are likely to see more success than those who choose to spend their lives abusing drugs.

Every year, the Dougherty County police department raises approximately $1,000 through the "Say No to Drugs and Skate" event.

Drug addiction costs the U.S. more than $484 billion every year, according to the Department of Justice. Drug rehab programs can help addicts detoxify, but local anti-substance abuse events may be able to prevent individuals from abusing substances.
