Anti-smoking campaigns that target adults also impact teens
By Staff Writer
The results from a recent study in the journal Addiction show that anti-smoking campaigns that target adult consumers can also deter teens from picking up the habit. These programs may include putting taxes on tobacco products, media campaigns and indoor smoking restrictions. Researchers believe that there could be many possible reasons for this. First, if adults are not smoking as much, teens will not think that the habit will make them more mature. Additionally, when parents and adults quit using cigarettes, their teens will not pick up on their negative influence. Studying the results of anti-smoking programs in Australia, researchers also found that the better-funded a campaign is, the more successful it will be at decreasing cigarette use among both adults and teens. According to the Nemours Foundation, teens who smoke are more likely to have heart attacks, strokes and many different types of cancer in the future. They may also suffer from an increased risk of illnesses such as colds, the flu, bronchitis and pneumonia. Teens who want to quit smoking but need extra help doing so may want to consider enrolling in therapeutic schools.
