Arizona drug court helps fathers sober up
By Staff Writer
Addiction in families does not only put a strain on relationships, but can be life-threatening to individuals who abuse illicit substances. Recently, one father made it his goal to get clean, spend more time with his children and lead by example. Bryan O'Neill has been sober for two years since attending the Engaging Fathers program, led by the Pima County Superior Court in Arizona to help addicts detoxify for the sake of their families Judge Karen Adam decided to help develop the program after recognizing the high rate of children in foster care, according to the Arizona Daily Star. Addiction is a common reason for parents to lose custody of their kids. County officials say that fathers who enter the program are not alone. Mothers and other family members are typically behind them as a support system in their efforts to come clean. The Engaging Fathers program helps individuals sober up, along with offering anger management and parenting courses. The goal is to help guardians regain custody of their children and live healthier lives. Approximately 4 million Americans were admitted to the emergency room in 2009 for abusing illicit substances, according to the Drug Abuse Warning Network. Drug rehab programs can provide individuals with the resources they need to get clean.
