California man lights up house for foster children

By Staff Writer

The holidays are typically a time to be merry, but for children who have suffered abuse and live in foster care, it can be a difficult season. One man from Arcata, California made it his mission this December to brighten the lives of local kids who are less fortunate than his family.

John Davis lived in many foster homes after suffering years of abuse as a kid, according to the Contra Costa Times. One of the few bright spots of his childhood was viewing local Christmas lights, which he uses as the inspiration for his projects today.

"It was the one time of year that we did anything together as a family," Davis told the news source. "I said, 'I wanted to do that when I have my own house and I kind of kept that alive in myself.'"

Since buying a home in Humboldt, California, Davis has decorated his property with thousands of lights every Christmas. With his wife, MaryAnn, Davis has opened his house to local foster children to tour throughout the season.

Almost five children died each day in 2007 due to abuse, according to the Child Help organization. Rehabilitation programs can help parents manage their aggression and maintain custody of their children.
