California organization raises awareness of underage drinking
By Staff Writer
As underage drinking continues to be a problem across the U.S., more experts are worried that parents may be the source of the problem. Adults supplying alcohol to minors is not uncommon in households across the country, according to The Californian. However, more individuals who have been negatively impacted by underage drinking are coming together to warn others of the dangers of abusing alcohol. Fausta Hernandez, a hair dresser from Salinas, California, uses her profession to spread the word about underage drinking. While cutting hair, she often makes it a point to bring up the topic with clients in an effort to make a difference, one person at a time. Hernandez is also a volunteer with the Sun Street Centers' Parents Creating Solutions, a local group dedicated to dissuading adults from providing alcohol to minors. The goal of the organization is to educate guardians on the dangers of underage drinking, regardless of adult supervision. Experts say that drinking alcohol at a young age can have long-term health effects. Individuals between the ages of 12 and 20 drink 11 percent of the alcohol that is consumed in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mentoring can help troubled teens stay away from using drugs and alcohol.
