'Choking game' becomes popular among school children

By Staff Writer

Parents at a Minnesota-based middle school recently received an email and a phone recording that warned them about a new dangerous activity their children could be participating in, Golden Valley's Patch website reports. Known as the "choking game," it involves one student choking another in order to create a tingling sensation when they begin to lose oxygen.

Tia Classen, communication director for the school, told the news outlet that while only a handful of students were caught playing the game at her facility, it is becoming a popular activity across the country.

According to the Dangerous Behaviors Foundation, the "choking game" is also know as elevator, hangman, blackout, flat-liner and the pass out game. Although some teens may think that it is harmless, the activity can cause memory loss, concussions, broken bones, seizures and death.

Parents who wish to prevent their children from engaging in similar risky behaviors may want to research troubled teenagers programs. The faculty at many of these institutions are trained to manage various issues in young adults, including mental and behavioral issues.
