Connecticut students speak out against drug use

By Staff Writer

Many kids use illicit substances to cope with the stress of school and family life, but not all children condone drug use. In some communities, high school students are taking the initiative to speak out against illicit substance use to positively influence their peers.

Teens from the Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, Connecticut, are attempting to steer kids away from drugs. At a recent forum, the youths blamed weak parenting, boredom and media glamorization for drug use among adolescents, according to the Norwich Bulletin.

Young people who spoke at the forum claimed that the first step to tackling the problem is creating a connection between school administrators and students. If kids believe that they can trust the faculty, they would be more willing to confide in them with their drug problems. Experts say that helping an individual confront the issue is the first step toward recovery.

Approximately 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Drug rehab programs can help individuals detoxify over time.
