Country star, nonprofit group launch tour against bullying

By Staff Writer

Many kids who suffer from obesity face health complications and may even become depressed. The symptoms can encourage children to turn to drugs to cope with the symptoms, but many kids can be deterred from substance abuse by having a positive role model.

Country recording artist Dan Evans is one example of an individual who had trouble losing weight until he participated on The Biggest Loser, a weight-loss reality television show. Since losing more than 130 pounds, Evans has addressed his former addiction to food through his music. He is now helping a campaign launched by a nonprofit organization to reduce the stigma behind weight.

Betty Hoeffner is the head of the organization, which is dedicated to countering racism, obesity and bullying among kids. Since hearing Evans' struggle with food addiction, Hoeffner and her nonprofit are now helping him launch the "Stop Self Bullying & LOVE Yourself Enough Tour."

Addiction in families can put a strain on relationships, but not all of them are related to drugs. Many individuals choose to use food to self-medicate themselves over time. During adolescence, kids are specifically conscious of their body image, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Positive reinforcement may help a child maintain their self esteem.
