County in California to begin selling drug test kits to parents

By Staff Writer

Many parents want to take proactive measures to keep their kids drug-free, but are unsure of how to begin. Now, individuals in Placer County, California, can purchase drug and alcohol screening tests to address underlying addiction issues.

The Placer County Deputy Sheriffs' Association recently gave local agencies grant money to administer drug and alcohol test kits to parents at a discounted price. For $10, individuals can purchase a drug test at local high schools or the sheriffs' office to detect substances in their child's saliva. Alcohol kits are $2, according to Rocklin and Roseville Today.

The drug test can provide positive results for amphetamines, methamphetamines, cocaine, opiates, PCP, marijuana, ecstasy, methadone, barbiturates and benzodiazepines, according to the news source. They can also detect any sampling that has been tampered with or diluted. Parents who want more details on the test results can also submit the samples to the Placer County Public Health Lab at a discounted rate.

High schools in Granite Bay, Del Oro, Chana, Colfax, Foresthill and North Tahoe will all begin selling the tests to parents in the near future.

More than 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Drug rehab centers can help individuals who have become dependent on substances over time.
