Delaware County teens advocate for drug-free lifestyle

By Staff Writer

Many teenagers shrug off advice from their parents to steer clear of substance abuse, but encouragement from peers can have a positive effect on kids who are considering experimenting with drugs.

Recently, adolescents in Delaware County, Indiana, began working to curb drug use among teens in the local area, according to The Star-Press. Hayley Williams, 17, is one of many kids advocating for the drug-free lifestyle. Williams told the news source that her goal is to show her peers that there are fun, healthy alternatives to substance abuse.

In light of Williams' efforts, the Delaware County Coordinating Council to Prevent Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse created a team of teenagers dedicated to educating peers on the advantages of living a drug-free life. The group will be given a variety of tools to reach out to other adolescents, including skit ideas and dances. The goal is to show individuals how to have fun without drug use.

Approximately 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Mentoring from both parents and peers can steer troubled teens away from drug abuse.
