Dogs can help kids with anxiety overcome fears
By Staff Writer
Approximately 40 million Americans aged 18 and older suffer from an anxiety disorder each year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Trauma can cause an anxiety illness to arise, and children are susceptible to developing these disorders as well. Detroit officials who work in the criminal justice field have dedicated themselves to developing new ways to help children who suffer from anxiety as a result of sexual assault. Amos, a chocolate Labrador, has been their latest tool in providing comfort for kids recovering from trauma, according to the Detroit News. Amo's handler, Dan Cojanu, told the news source that children appear to feel better when around his dog. Their anxiety seemingly vanishes upon being exposed to Amos, who acts as a guardian for children who come to Cojanu for help. Rehabilitation facilities can also help kids who are suffering from anxiety as a result of trauma. However, new approaches to treating the symptoms of these disorders have proven to be effective as well. Amos is one example of many dogs who have improved the moods and attitudes of people who have been affected by anxiety.
