Emergency personnel raise awareness of new drug

By Staff Writer

A recent article published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine describes the symptoms that have been associated with the use of ivory wave, a currently legal drug with increasing popularity.

The authors noted that ivory wave can be referred to by several other names, including purple wave, ivory coast or vanilla sky.

Consumers are able to purchase the substance online in 200 to 500 milligram packets as bath salts.

The report details several symptoms that may be displayed by individuals who use ivory wave, including high blood pressure, hallucinations and uncontrollable facial movements.

The authors warn that anyone who snorts or swallows ivory wave may not be aware of the amount of stimulants the drug contains per gram. They explain that unlike cocaine, ivory wave products do not have an established consistency, and amounts as small as five milligrams may result in hospitalization.

This new information may initiate concern in parents of teens who experiment with or abuse drugs.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, ecstasy use among eighth and 10th graders has been on the rise since 2009.

Young people who struggle with drug or alcohol use may benefit from boarding school environments where their behaviors can be monitored.
