EMSA teaches kids about dangers of drugs

By Staff Writer

Substance abuse programs for youth are dedicated to providing teens with healthy alternatives to drugs, but active community groups can be effective in keeping kids away from substances as well.

Recently, the Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) in Tulsa, Oklahoma, visited students at Kipp Academy to teach them about the benefits of staying drug-free. The goal of EMSA officials was to show children the dangers of abusing drugs and alcohol, according to News On 6 TV.

"It makes you ...[not] want to even think about taking a chance of doing drugs or anything like that," student William McKenney told the news source.

The public information officer for EMSA, Chris Stevens, told the news source that educating kids is one of the most effective ways to keep them drug-free. He explains that using drugs, such as cigarettes and alcohol, commonly leads to abusing harder substances in the future. The objective of EMSA is to eliminate the desire to experiment with drugs at all.

Approximately 29 percent of high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances on campus, according to Teen Help, a statistics site. Substance abuse programs for youth, lead by local community groups, may prevent kids from abusing drugs.
