Even low blood-alcohol levels can lead to serious car accidents
By Staff Writer
Although many teens believe that it is safe to drive after having only one or two drinks, a new study by researchers from the University of California, San Diego shows that even low blood-alcohol levels can be very dangerous for drivers. In order to get these results, researchers studied data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which documents all fatal car accidents along with the blood-alcohol content of drivers. Using this data, the team found that accidents are almost 40 percent more severe when alcohol is barely detectable in a driver's blood than if he or she was completely sober. Additionally, researchers found that of individuals who had blood-alcohol contents of .01, there are 4.33 serious injuries for every non-serious injury on the road. The professionals believe that this is because buzzed drivers are more likely to speed and not wear their seat-belts properly. Parents who are concerned that their children's alcohol addictions will lead to dangerous car accidents may want to consider enrolling them in schools for troubled youths. Faculty at these programs may be qualified to treat addictions while showing adolescents the possible consequences of their actions.
