Expert evaluations show violent video games may be harmful to kids
By Staff Writer
In order to assess whether or not violent video games or media are detrimental to children, researchers from Ohio State University recently weighed the level of expertise of scientists who support a ban on the games, compared to those who argue against the restriction. There is a pending federal hearing in the state of California on the topic of banning the sale or rental of violent video games to minors under the age of 18. The researchers explained that 115 experts are currently slated to provide testimony that depicts the harmful effects of the aggressive entertainment, while 82 plan to give evidence that the games do not pose a threat to the well-being of children. According to the study's findings, experts who support the prohibition have demonstrated more professional knowledge on the subject matter than their opponents. The results showed that 60 percent of those who back the ban have published at least one scientific study on the subject matter, while only 17 percent of the challengers have done the same. According to Online Gamers Anonymous, more than 72 percent of Americans play video games. Children who exhibit negative behaviors associated with violent media use may benefit from troubled teens programs offered at boarding schools.
