Expert speaks to parents about signs of addiction in teens
By Staff Writer
Many individuals become addicted to illicit substances at a young age, but experts are still trying to understand how the brain responds to large doses of drugs over an extended period of time. Bob Sharits, a chemical dependency counselor, recently spoke to parents and school administrators about how illicit substances can affect the adolescent mind. Sharits spoke at Canyon High School in Canyon Country, California, to discuss the reality of drug and alcohol addiction in the local community. Although several teens use drugs to simply experiment, many of them are unaware that they can become easily dependent on illicit substances, according to KHTS-AM 1220. Sharits' goal was to help parents identify the symptoms of addiction in their children. Because the brain is not fully developed until around age 20, experts say that drug use can do significant damage when it is used during adolescence. Teens also do not process information using their frontal lobes, as opposed to adults. Young adults think with their amygdala, which is responsible for impulsive behavior. More than 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Drug rehab centers can help kids who have become addicted to substances over an extended period of time.
