Experts say kids are suffering from the economic downturn as well

By Staff Writer

Drug rehab centers often have programs suited for adults, but more programs are developing branches to help kids who are struggling with addiction. Experts say that the economic downturn has not only left adults feeling financial pressure, but kids as well.

Addiction in families is not uncommon, but researchers suggest that it has increased since the 2008 recession, according to The News-Press. One outpatient center in Naples, Florida, has established a mental health and substance abuse center to specifically accommodate the growing number of children suffering from addiction.

Expert Bonnie Fredeen told the news source that more kids are exhibiting adjustment disorders and anger issues as their parents financially struggle to maintain a comfortable life at home. Many children are developing depression and anxiety, leading them to abuse illicit substances.

Researchers say that making major adjustments to a teenager's life can result in additional stress and aggression. Parents who have lost their jobs may no longer have money to spend on family bonding activities, putting a strain on relationships.

Drug addiction costs the U.S. approximately $484 billion every year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Addiction in families may not only result in conflict, but also negative health consequences.
