Experts warn of childhood drug exposure

By Staff Writer

Addiction in families is not uncommon, but experts say that the exposing kids to drugs may have negative consequences in the future. Recently, child welfare officials urged the local community to report any suspicious drug activity in Blair County, Pennsylvania, according to WJAC-TV. The authorities stress that the situation may put children in danger.

A 32-year-old man from the region was busted on the suspicion of operating a methamphetamine lab in his motorhome. Investigators discovered that the his 9-year-old daughter had been living with him at the time, and was exposed to the hazardous materials used to manufacture the drug. The Pennsylvania Attorney General's office told the news source that it took more than eight hours to remove the items from the suspect's home.

Experts say they have yet to determine the long-term effects of exposing children to chemicals. However, kids who are taught to keep their parents' activities a secret typically face anxiety and stress. Officials say that the fear takes its toll over time.

Drug addiction costs the U.S. approximately $484 billion every year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Substance abuse programs can help parents get clean and provide a better life for their children.
