Family shares story of addiction with California high school
By Staff Writer
Drug rehab centers may be able to help kids who have become addicted to illicit substances, but educating children on the dangers of drugs can reduce the number of dependency cases. Recently, Sherrie and Michael Rubin of Spring Valley, California, shared their story of addiction with kids to provide insight into the world of addiction. The couple visited Mount Miguel High School with their son, Aaron. In 2005, Aaron Rubin almost died of an OxyContin overdose, according to Sign On San Diego. He is now quadriplegic and unable to speak, requiring care every day around the clock. The Rubins explained to students that marijuana was the gateway substance that eventually led their son to prescription drugs. During the presentation, Aaron Rubin used his fingers to signal "yes" and "no" answers to questions from the crowd. Michael Rubin told Mount Miguel High School students that addiction in families can not only put a strain on relationships, but become fatal. The Rubins have created a website, titled Pills Kill, to offer presentations to organizations and schools that wish to educate kids on addiction. More than 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Substance abuse programs for youth may be able to prevent addiction.
