Former heroin addict shares story of detoxification
By Staff Writer
Many kids turn to illicit substances to cope with the stress of family life and school, but anti-drug education may be able to reduce the rate of addiction. Kelli Davis, a former drug abuser, is sharing her story with children in Nevada to make a positive impact on the next generation. At age 14, Davis started using illicit substances heavily to cope with being raped, according to KOLO-TV. Her drug of choice was heroin, which eventually led to jail. Approximately 41 days ago, Davis was battling an opiate addiction that was taking over her life. At age 21, Davis is now free of illicit substances and working to prevent others from going down the same road. Grant Davis, Kelli's brother, said that it has become difficult to trust her since she started using drugs. He is scheduled to appear on an upcoming anti-heroin ad, and told the news source he is rooting for his sister to stay clean. More than 3 million Americans say they have tried heroin at least once in their lifetime, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Drug rehab centers can help individuals with opiate addictions.
