By Staff Writer
Many parents are hesitant to talk to their kids about drugs at a young age, but experts say that starting early may be the most effective preventative measure. In addition, opening lines of communication may strengthen a bond between family members over time, according to the Statesman Journal. Experts say that by the time kids reach their senior year of high school, half of them are regular drinkers. Although many parents are reluctant to face the reality of substance abuse among teens, the largest increase in alcohol intake is typically around sixth grade, according to the news source. For this reason, addressing the dangers of drugs and alcohol at a young age can be largely beneficial. Parents are encouraged to establish a foundation of trust before speaking to their child about the topic. Once an individual feels safe enough to confide in an adult, they are likely to be open to words of wisdom. More than 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Drug rehab programs can help kids who have become addicted to illicit substances, but parental guidance is one way that the problem can be avoided.
