Four Loko returns to shelves in Texas

By Staff Writer

The dangerous combination of caffeine and alcohol in the beverage Four Loko has caused a stir since being attributed to the death of several young adults over the past year. However, after reworking the formula, the drink has been approved by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) and will remain on the shelves.

The creators of Four Loko, Drink Four Brewing Company, say that the drink no longer contains caffeine. It will continue to be distributed across the state, available to young adults who are aged 21 or older. Reformulated versions of similar caffeinated beverages, including Crunk, Joose and Core, are awaiting approval. Their manufacturers hope to once again hit the shelves after getting the nod from the TABC.

Drink Four Brewing Company representative Jeff Wright said that the business is happy to work with the TABC to comply with health standards. In addition to reformulating Four Loko, the company intends to enhance its warning labels and list alcohol content with accordance to local legislation.

More than 42 percent of kids under the age of 21 said they consumed alcohol within a 30-day period of 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rehabilitation facilities can provide individuals who are dependent on alcohol with substance abuse help.
