Holiday parties give kids opportunities to drink

By Staff Writer

Many families enjoy hosting holiday parties as the year comes to an end. However, experts say that the availability of alcohol at social events provides children with the ideal opportunity to get their hands on the beverages as well.

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission recently issued a warning to adults who intend on hosting parties throughout the holiday season. New research suggests that many kids take advantage of the chance to obtain alcohol and drink at these social events, according to the Press and Guide. Many parents even condone the behavior, even though providing alcohol to minors under the age of 21 is illegal.

Nida Samona, the chairman of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, told the news source that parents have the most influence over their child's outlook on alcohol. She adds that 65 percent of kids say they obtain most of the beverages from friends and family.

Experts recommend that parents keep alcohol out of reach in their homes and monitor their supply. Openly discussing the dangers of underage drinking may also positively influence children over time.

Nearly 42 percent of children admitted to consuming alcohol within a 30-day period in 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Guardians who lead by example may be able to reduce this number over time.
