K-2 cigarettes banned in Indiana

By Staff Writer

Many teenagers turn to marijuana as their illicit substance of choice, but a new legal drug that provides a similar high is growing in popularity. K-2 cigarettes, which are also known as synthetic marijuana, can be found in convenience stores and smoke shops across the country. However, some communities are working to ban the products.

The side effects of smoking K-2 cigarettes include hallucinations and seizures, which can result in lasting negative health complications. A number of counties across Indiana have instituted local bans on the substance, but a new bill will prohibit K-2 sales in the state for good, according to Eagle Country 99.3 FM.

Recently, a 47 to 0 vote by the state legislators passed Senate Bill 57, which bans the synthetic marijuana across Indiana. Previously, many cities had issued their own restrictions on the K-2 cigarettes, including Batesville. The new law will ban 19 of the chemicals found in the synthetic marijuana known to cause the negative side effects in users.

Drug addiction costs the U.S. more than $484 billion annually, according to the Department of Justice. Banning substances that may lead individuals to abusing more addictive drugs may help reduce crime rats in local communities.
