Kansas couple advocates for better autism education
By Staff Writer
Autism is a learning disability that can not only dramatically impact the life of a child, but a parent as well. Although there is no cure for the condition, many individuals are working to educate the public on the condition as researchers work toward finding a viable treatment option. Val and Tony Baker of Kansas are an example of a couple that is attempting to raise awareness of conditions, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism. The Bakers have two children, Halie and Morgan, who both suffer from mental illnesses. Halie has been diagnosed with autism, while her sister lives with mild retardation and ADHD, according to The Emporia Gazette. Both of the Bakers' children were diagnosed with their conditions at a young age, but the couple is attempting to raise awareness of the necessity for more efficient testing. By diagnosing conditions like autism during infancy, patients can be provided with the necessary care at an early stage. Approximately 1 in 80 children suffers from an autism spectrum disorder in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rehabilitation facilities may be able to help patients cope with the condition over time.
