Knox County DA warns parents against supplying alcohol to underage kids

By Staff Writer

With prom season approaching, Randy Nichols, a district attorney from Knox County, Tennessee, recently reminded parents of the dangers associated with teen drinking in a statement published in the Knoxville News Sentinel.

He addressed the trend of parents providing alcohol for their children due to the theory that parental supervision and moderation will promote responsible drinking. Nichols told the newspaper that 65 percent of underage drinkers obtain liquor from family members or friends. However, he noted that under Tennessee laws, convicted adult suppliers may spend nearly one year in prison, lose their license or pay fines of more than $2,000.

Nichols explained to the news provider that teens who drink at home tend to consume more alcoholic beverages when they are out at social gatherings than their peers who are not permitted to do so. He noted that allowing adolescents to use alcohol may create a misunderstanding that laws can be broken without consequences.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 72 percent of high school seniors have used alcohol.

Kids who display unhealthy drinking behaviors may benefit from attending boarding schools for troubled youth, where their daily activities can be monitored.
