Kutztown parents meet to address drug abuse among kids

By Staff Writer

As substance abuse remains a growing problem among young adults, parents and teachers are banding together to reduce the amount of illicit drug use in their local communities. Recently, administrators and parents met at Kutztown High School in Pennsylvania to face the reality of drug addiction, according to the Kutztown Area Patriot.

Andrew Brett, the Kutztown High School counselor, spoke to a crowd of approximately 90 parents who were looking to learn more about how addiction in families can tear apart a loving home. Visitors were shown an image of a child who had more than 70 indicators of drug use in their bedroom. The goal was to help adults learn the signs of illicit substance abuse to prevent future addiction in their kids.

Jamie Reisinger, the assistant director of education at the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center in York, Pennsylvania, was also present to speak to parents. He told individuals that even the most unsuspecting kids have been known to abuse illicit substances.

More than 39 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illegal drugs on campus, according to Teen Help, an addiction resource site. Learning to point out the signs of substance use can help adults prevent drug abuse in their own households.
