Local anti-drug group helps deter crime
By Staff Writer
As addiction remains a growing concern in many cities, drug rehab centers have become a necessity. However, more local community groups are doing their part to reduce the number of children who turn to drugs. The Juvenile Intervention Team in Santa Clarita Valley, California, is one example of a group dedicated to battling addiction, according to the Santa Clarita Valley Signal. Since it was created by the local sheriff station, the team has made 139 arrests in drug trafficking cases and provided authorities with 120 crime tips. Captain Paul Becker told the news source that the group was developed to address the number of children abusing illicit substances. Experts say that individuals who begin using drugs early eventually turn to harder, more dangerous substances later in life. Preventing drug abuse early may be able to reduce the number of addiction cases over time. Approximately 29 percent of high school students say they can easily access drugs on campus, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Drug rehab centers can provide individuals with the resources they need to detoxify over time. However, anti-drug community groups can help deter the number of kids who turn to illicit substances at a young age as well.
