MADD designates day for parents to address teen drinking

By Staff Writer

While many parents have spoken to their young children about the dangers of underage drinking, USA Today reports that members of the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have designated April 21 as an awareness day for adults who have not addressed these issues to initiate conversations with their kids.

MADD spokespeople told the news provider that on "PowerTalk21 Day," parents should let their teens know that underage drinking is unacceptable, and that socializing at locations where youths are consuming alcohol is also dangerous.

Additionally, the members of the group have collaborated with Nationwide Insurance to host training workshops and offer free brochures with tips for talking to young people about alcohol, the news source noted.

According to a Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 42 percent of high school students had consumed alcohol, 24 percent engaged in binge drinking, 28 percent rode in a car with a driver who had consumed alcohol and 10 percent drove under the influence of liquor.

Parents who are concerned that their teens struggle with alcohol abuse may consider enrolling them in boarding schools for troubled youth. These institutions offer healthy environments in which kids can thrive academically.
