Massachusetts autistic child faces many challenges

By Staff Writer

Yaacob Gebru, who is six years old, has had many challenges when it comes to his academics, Nashoba Publishing reports. He is a nonverbal autistic boy who receives all of his medication, nutrition and water through a feeding tube and must be accompanied by a registered nurse at all times.

Gebru was also diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder- Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). According to Autism Speaks, this issue can differ from classic autism in that it does not fit all of the criteria of the disorder. For example, children may get PDD-NOS later than someone who has classic autism.

There are a limited number of schools that will allow Gebru to attend while he is under a nurse's supervision. Therefore, he must travel almost 30 miles to an institution that will accept him.

The boy may soon face additional challenges as his family's health insurance will not allow him to participate in a program that would safely wean him off his feeding tubes, despite doctor recommendations, the news outlet reports.

Parents who struggle to manage their children who have autism and other disorders may want to consider enrolling them in therapeutic schools.
