'Minor Drinking, Major Problems' to address underage alcohol use

By Staff Writer

In order to address the high prevalence of underage drinkers in California's Newport Beach area, local school officials and members of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving group will host an informational meeting on the dangers of teen alcohol consumption, called "Minor Drinking, Major Problems," the Daily Pilot reported.

"It's more of bringing awareness to what a parent can do to prevent their child from even starting underage drinking. A lot of parents don't realize how easy it is for kids to get alcohol," event coordinator Monica Venable told the newpaper.

The news provider said that the meeting was prompted by results of a recent youth survey. The findings showed that within the prior 30 days, 9 percent of Newport Beach seventh graders had drank alcohol, along with 23 percent of high school freshmen and 50 percent of juniors.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, more than 6.5 million Americans between the ages of 12 and 20 have engaged in binge drinking. Adolescents who struggle to control their alcohol use may benefit from troubled teens programs offered by boarding schools.
