More California teens are using prescription drugs to get high
By Staff Writer
The 2010 California Healthy Kids Survey found that more high school students are abusing prescription drugs than ever before, according to a recent article published in The Fresno Bee. The survey results showed that 13 percent of high school freshmen in Fresno had used drugs that were not prescribed to them, such as Vicodin and OxyContin, with the intent of getting high. Moreover, 17 percent of the district's juniors had also used the substances illegally, the news source reported. Law enforcement personnel told the Bee that many adolescents steal pills from their family members or buy them on the street for about $40. The news organization noted that the number of rehab admissions for prescription drug addiction climbed more than 7 percent between 1998 and 2008. According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, prescribed pills are the second most common drug of choice for American teens, after marijuana. Pain killers and other prescribed drugs carry risks of dependency and teen users may carry their addictions into their adult lives if they do not receive treatment. Residential boarding schools for troubled youth may be able to provide intensive therapy to address behavioral problems, including drug abuse.
