More college students abuse marijuana in addition to alcohol
By Staff Writer
Alcohol is typically at the forefront of substance abuse issues among college students, but many individuals say that marijuana should be considered just as dangerous on campuses across the country. Ben Goodheart, a sophomore at Quinnipiac University, is one student who is attempting to raise awareness of the dangers of substance abuse, according to the Quinnipiac Chronicle. Recently, one of Goodheart's friends was expelled for marijuana possession. Although he is not opposed to the punishment, Goodheart is attempting to make the consequences equal for both alcohol and marijuana use on campus. Goodheart told the news source that while alcohol abusers typically receive a slap on the wrist, marijuana users receive harsh punishments, such as being removed from campus housing. David Barger, chief of security, cited a recent study that found that there were more negative societal impacts from overindulging in alcohol compared to marijuana. Marijuana has a wide range of negative biological and psychological effects, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drug rehab programs can help individuals who are dependent on alcohol, but also interested in seeking assistance for marijuana usage.
