More colleges provide alternatives to drinking activities

By Staff Writer

College kids are known for partying hard and drinking heavily, but researchers say that indulging in alcohol is growing out of style on many campuses across the country. As postsecondary institutions work to give kids an alternative to games, such as beer pong, more young adults are drinking less and finding other ways to have a good time, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Brandon Busteed, the chief executive officer of a student alcohol prevention research group, told the news source that approximately 100 schools do a good job of providing alcohol-free activities to young adults. Others create programs and hand them over to the kids, while some organizations are initiated by the students themselves.

A long-term study released by researchers at the University of Michigan in 2009 found that approximately 37 percent of college students binge drink, which means they consume five or more drinks in a row. This is a 3 percent drop from 2008, but it is still higher than the rate among high school students and young adults who do not attend college.

Approximately 92 percent of adults who drink excessively claim to have engaged in binge drinking within a 30-day period, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drug rehab problems can help alcoholics detoxify over time.
