More Dallas teens using heroin to cope with stress

By Staff Writer

Drug rehab centers can help individuals who have become addicted to the substance, and many Texas teenagers are turning to them for help.

According to the Greater Dallas Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the number of individuals seeking treatment for heroin addiction has doubled, according to KDAF-TV. Approximately 33 teens sought help for heroin addiction in 2005, and that amount has increased to 215 in 2010.

Brianna Bryant, a sophomore at Booker T. Washington High School, told the news source that she sees many of her peers turn to heroin to cope with stress. Bryant believes that many teens crumble under the anxiety that comes with schoolwork and family issues.

More than 1 percent of high school seniors say they have tried heroin, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Regardless, experts say that individuals who abuse heroin should seek help from a medical professional as soon as possible. Although they may not be addicted, using the drug can come with substantial negative health consequences. Parents who keep lines of communication open between their children may also be able to deter them from substance abuse.
