More kids turning to prescription drugs to get high

By Staff Writer

Drug rehab programs can help individuals who are struggling with addiction, but many people find themselves in trouble with the law before they seek assistance for their problem. In some cases, it is too late for addicts to seek help once they lose their lives.

Recently, new data was released that showed that more West Virginia residents are dying from drug overdoses than car accidents, according to WDTV. Many of the individuals who are losing the battle with illicit substances are young adults who are easily finding them on the streets.

Chief deputy R.L. Wright from the Marion County Sheriff's Department told the news source that many children are finding ways to get high in their own medicine cabinets. Prescription drugs have become popular among kids who have friends with medications. These substances are also easy to come by on the streets.

Previously, heroin and cocaine were primarily responsible for the number of drug overdoses in the area. Wright says that this has changed since more children have begun taking pills from their friends and family.

More than 29 percent of public high school students say they can easily obtain illicit substances, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Drug rehab programs can help kids who have become dependent on prescription medications.
