More kids turning to smokeless tobacco for flavor

By Staff Writer

Variations of tobacco have appealed to children for decades, and a new candy is raising concerns among parents and anti-drug advocates. Many tobacco manufacturers have begun developing products that mimic mints, but pose the same negative health effects as cigarettes.

Many states across the country have adopted "no smoking" policies, forcing tobacco companies to come up with new creative ways to market their products, according to the Standard-Examiner. Some come in the form of mints, while others look like toothpicks. Regardless, experts say that these items are highly addictive and can cause cancer.

Tobacco companies have turned to taste as a way to lure children, and minty flavors have becoming increasing popular. Experts say that smokeless tobacco typically has 700 percent more wintergreen flavor than candy, which has been a successful selling point for individuals who want a strong taste.

Kids who use tobacco are more likely to begin using other drugs and engage in high-risk sexual behavior, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drug rehab programs can help individuals kick their addiction to nicotine and live healthier lives.
