More teens smuggling drugs into school
By Staff Writer
Approximately 20 percent of teenagers say they have taken medication for recreational purposes without a prescription, according to Kids Health, a statistics site. Substance abuse programs for youth are working to lower the number of children who use prescription drugs without a medical purpose. However, many communities are still struggling to control drug usage among teens, according to the Carolina Journal. Experts say that prescription drugs are only second to marijuana on the list of abused substance among adolescents. As kids continue to abuse drugs at an alarming rate, more of them are smuggling them into schools as well. Many school districts have begun to take their own initiative by confiscating contraband found on campuses. Drug-sniffing dogs have been brought into schools to reduce substance abuse as well, but experts say parents need to take matters into their own hands as well. Substance abuse programs for youth can help lower the number of children using drugs, but parents are encouraged to communicate with their children. Holding family dinners and communicating a disapproval of drugs through mentoring can help keep kids away from substance abuse.
