Mother speaks out against heroin use

By Staff Writer

Many parents refuse to believe that their child could start using heroin, but Georgia Martinez is one mother who was forced to face the reality of addiction.

Her son, Patrick, was a good student until he neared high school graduation, according to KOAT-7 News. Martinez says Patrick began hanging out with a new crowd as he grew older, and he became increasingly withdrawn. She noticed that his eating and sleeping patterns began to change, and before Martinez knew it, Patrick was on the verge of death.

Experts told Martinez that her son had developed toxic lucoensyphilopothy from using heroin. It had caused holes in his brain, which required hospitalization. Eventually, the results of heroin killed Martinez's son, and she is now on a mission to raise awareness of the drug and its negative effects.

Martinez told the news source that a lack of education can be to blame for the number of kids addicted to heroin. Many individuals fail to recognize the consequences that come with using the drug.

More than 29 percent of public high school students say they can get their hands on illicit substances, according to the Department of Justice. Drug rehab programs can help kids who have become addicted to dangerous substances.
