New Jersey man helps promote drug-free lifestyle for kids

By Staff Writer

Guidance counselors and parents can provide substance abuse help for children who have become addicted to drugs. However, one New Jersey man has made it a goal to keep illicit substances out of the hands of kids to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Dan Occhiogrosso is the founder of the group, "Creating the Crossover," dedicated to educating children on the benefits of living drug-free. Recently, Occhiogrosso visited Wayne Hills High School to discuss the negative consequences that come with substance abuse.

"He made a strong impact and the kids were captivated by him," student assistance counselor Donna King told the news source.

Occhiogrosso often tells students the story of injuring his leg during basketball, which left him unable to participate in the sport. Instead of turning to drugs to cope with the disappointment, Occhiogrosso made the decision to live drug-free as he pushed through his recovery. His goal is to help children understand what substance abuse prohibits individuals from accomplishing, as opposed to just promoting an anti-drug attitude.

Approximately 4 million Americans were admitted to the emergency room in 2009 for abusing illicit substances, according to the Drug Abuse Warning Network. Mentoring can help prevent drug use among kids.
