New law in Florida creates harsher punishments for parents who let kids drink

By Staff Writer

Florida lawmakers are currently working to create stricter punishments for adults who allow their teenagers to drink illegally at house parties, Marco News reports. The new legislation makes it a first-degree misdemeanor on the second offense for adults who allow teens to drink. However, it is still a second-degree misdemeanor on the first offense.

Parents who are charged with a second-degree misdemeanor will face a maximum of 60 days in prison and a $500 fine. A first-degree misdemeanor is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine, the news outlet reports.

However, adults who allow their underage children to drink may be doing more harm than putting themselves at risk for a misdemeanor. According to a recent study, teens who drink with parental supervision are more likely to have alcohol problems than youths who are not allowed to drink, MSNBC reports.

Adults who do not feel that they can properly manage their teen's alcohol consumption may want to consider enrolling him or her in a troubled youth boarding school.
