New study shows that many teens are addicted to the internet

By Staff Writer

A recent study by researchers from Yale University shows that about one in every 25 teens has an internet addiction. This may pose a serious threat to the nation's youths, as students who constantly feel the need to go online are more likely to be aggressive, depressed and use drugs.

In order to see how dependent students were on the internet, Yale researchers asked local teens if they ever had an irresistible urge to go online, if they ever tried to quit or cut down on the amount of time they spent on the internet or if they felt a tension or a stress release by going online. About 4 percent of students answered these questions positively.

A psychiatrist from Oregon Health and Science University told Reuters that with this study, along with other research, there is enough evidence to say that computer use can be an addictive behavior like gambling and smoking.

Parents who think their children are suffering from an internet addiction may want to research the option of enrolling them in a therapeutic boarding school. Professionals at these facilities are trained to handle a variety of teen addictions.
