Oklahoma City group helps kids stay out of gangs

By Staff Writer

More than 62 percent of teenagers say they can easily obtain illicit drugs from local street gangs, according to Teen Help, a statistics site. Substance abuse programs for youth work to keep kids drug-free, but local community groups may have a positive impact as well.

Oklahoma City's gang prevention unit has successfully helped keep a number of children stay off the streets and away from illicit substances, according to The Oklahoman. The program, also known as Family Awareness and Community Teamwork (FACT), was created in 2007 to give kids a safe place to go after school. More than 200 children are now enrolled in the program, which is operated by 50 members.

The group specifically offers alternatives to drugs and gang violence to children who may be vulnerable due to their living situation. FACT members are willing to speak with the parents of these kids and help the children understand that joining a gang does not have to be the only lifestyle option.

Approximately 38 percent of public high school students say that they can easily obtain illicit drugs on campus, according to Teen Help. Substance abuse programs for youth and mentoring may help kids stay away from drugs and street gangs.
