By Staff Writer

More than 29 percent of high school students say drugs are readily available on campus, according to Teen Help, a statistics site. Substance abuse programs for youth work to dissuade children from using illicit drugs, but experts say that parents may be able to help as well.

Prescription drug use is second to marijuana among young adults between the ages of 12 and 17, according to 10-TV News. Experts say that many kids use prescription medications for years before they realize they have become dependent on the substances.

Easy access has played a role in the increase in of prescription drug abusers as well. Many kids are finding them in their own medicine cabinets. Parents are typically in the dark or in denial over their children's substance abuse until it is too late. Experts are encouraging parents to do their part by getting rid of old medications and keeping the lines of communication open.
