Parenting techniques may determine how kids deal with emotions

By Staff Writer

The way in which parents react to their child's misbehavior or negative emotions may impact whether or not they experience behavioral disorders as they age, according to a new study that was conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois.

The researchers said that parents sometimes do not know how to help their kids work through the emotions that cause temper tantrums or separation issues, so they react by punishing the toddlers or try to minimize their emotions.

The study involved 107 children who were a little older than two, along with their mothers and fathers.

Investigators surveyed the parents to determine how they respond to unfavorable conduct and evaluated the children six months later for any behavioral symptoms.

The results showed that subjects who were punished for their fears or frustrations were more likely to express anxiety and withdrawal. Moreover, these symptoms were more pronounced in boys.

Researchers said they believe that this finding may be attributed to the societal pressures that call for males to inhibit their emotions.

Young children who suffer from behavior disorders may benefit from treatments that are available through boarding schools or programs for troubled youth.
