Parents who cannot manage autistic teens can enroll them in therapeutic schools
By Staff Writer
According to Autism Speaks, the word autism refers to a category of complex developmental problems called pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). While professionals are still unsure about what causes autism, it is estimated that one in every 110 children has the disorder. Many experts believe the the problem is growing by 10 to 17 percent every year. Children who have autism may require additional adult supervision and care so they do not accidentally harm themselves or others. Tristan Guffey, an autistic 15-year-old boy, recently died in Michigan when he lit himself on fire while playing with matches, Fox News reports. On the day of the accident, two men said that they saw the boy trying to roll on the grass to put the fire out. As the lawn caught on fire also, he was unable to control the flames. If parents believe that they are not able to give their autistic teenager the appropriate amount of attention, they may want to consider enrolling him or her in a therapeutic boarding school. The staff at these facilities are often trained to manage youths with disorders like autism.
